DO I NEED A SUPPORT CREW?
No: Red Bull Defiance organise all of the logistics and transport required for the event. All you need to do is ensure that you have transport to event HQ for race rego and for race start on day 1 and day 2. We will supply you with gear transport bags that you can use to pack you transitional gear into. Each day you will need to re-pack these bags so that you have everything you need when you arrive into transition area. A private bike transport company transports the mountain bikes. Bikes need to be racked by 7pm each night in order to get them to where they need to be for the next days racing.
WHERE CAN I TRAIN FOR RED BULL DEFIANCE WHEN IN WANAKA?
Several parts of the Red Bull Defiance course encompasses high country stations with no available access to the public. However there are still several opportunities to train on some aspects of the course. This includes the following: Rocky Mountain Run: Commence at the DOC carpark on the Mt Aspiring Rd. Run the loop track. This will cover approximately 50% of the actual run course. Matukituki Paddle from West Wanaka Bridge to Glendhu Bay: 100% replica of the course. Millennium Trail run from Glendhu Bay to Wanaka Town Centre: 100% replica of the course. Lake Wanaka/Clutha River Kayak to Red Bridge (30km approx.). During the race you will exit at Oxbow but there is no option to do this during your training paddle as you will not be able to access Oxbow land for pick ups. Skyline Run: Commence at Spots Creek carpark on Cardrona Valley rd and ascend up to Mt Alpha and Mt Roy. Descend from Mt Roy via the event course through Waterfall Creek (bit of a scramble with no defined track) or the normal Mt Roy zig-zag descent. Please refer to course maps for further detail on how to locate further the following training zones
I WOULD LIKE TO RACE BUT I DO NOT HAVE A TEAM MEMBER, CAN YOU HELP?
If you would like to race but do not have a team mate, please contact sally@redbulldefiance.She will ask you a few questions about your sporting background and achievements and then do her best to match you up with someone of similar ability. If you consent she can also post something on social media for you.
AM I FIT ENOUGH TO RACE RED BULL DEFIANCE?
Red Bull Defiance is an endurance event and you need to be prepared to race for up to 10 hours each day. You will need to race at a moderate pace in order to finish the event by the cut-off times so unfortunately its not quite enough to just plod your way around the course. You will need to train, prepare and race hard on the day in order to achieve the course. We have several contacts for coaching services within New Zealand who can help you prepare a training program that will ensure your success.
DO I NEED TO BE A GOOD PADDLER?
The kayak legs of Red Bull Defiance are graded 1/2. The boats that you will be using are also very stable. No kayak certification is required to participate in Red Bull Defiance.
DO I NEED TO BE A GOOD MOUNTAIN BIKER?
Again, the course itself is relatively non-technical but it is quite steep in places and requires a strong level of MTB fitness.
